The definition of success is hard to argue with. If you’ve ever worked in a fast-food restaurant, you’ve probably heard the phrase, “You can’t succeed unless you fail twice as hard”. It’s true.
It sounds like a cliche, but it has a great point. We have to live by this mantra. When you think about it, we should all consider that we are one resource on Earth. We are all connected to our fellow humans, and our job (and our lives) is to make sure these connections thrive. To this end, you can have success if you choose to make sure the people you work with are able to have long-term relationships with people outside of your industry.
Its a great point, but, as in most things, there is no such thing as a free lunch.
Just recently I was asked a question about diversification into a new industry because they wanted to diversify their workforce. As the questioner was asking me this, I was thinking, “I’m sure there is someone out there that has the skills needed for this.” Then I paused, thought for a second, and answered, “I can’t really say that I know anyone that can do this because I have no idea about this industry.
That’s a pretty good example of how easy it is to get fooled into thinking that a job is one that you can do if you choose to do it, when in reality there is no “right” way to do it.
The questioner wanted me to comment on diversifying into the movie industry. This is a very valid point. For years, I have seen people think they had what it took to be a movie star, and then they get a life of luxury and prestige. Not true. In the movie industry, there is a much greater demand for talent than most people realize.
The reason people are hesitant to hire some of the most talented actors is that they are rarely ever seen on television for a living. They are usually seen in the news, in the movies, or on video games.
Though many of the Hollywood movies don’t have a main character, you will find some that do. This is because the major actors are more likely to be portrayed by other actors. This becomes even more apparent when you think about it like this, as most movies don’t have a main character. If someone is in a film and you are seeing this type of a character, it’s more likely they will be seen in a movie.
We are not in Hollywood. Most Hollywood movies these days are full of explosions, explosions, and more explosions. However, we are not in Hollywood. We have to pay for our movie tickets, so we are going to see more explosions. That said, we are not in Hollywood, so we are going to see an explosion.
